Release Date: 27. Juli 2018
A mild, balmy autumn evening in London: I’m standing in the crowd at the Lexington to witness a rare appearance by Louis Philippe and The Monochrome Set.
A lesser known opening act from Augsburg, Germany, Friedrich Sunlight enter the stage to set the mood. I’m instantly blown away by the first notes and the catchy “ba-ba-bas”, as is the rest of the audience. We listen spellbound, though we can't understand a single word. But that doesn't really matter: It's just wonderful to hear the singer, Kenji, who left his hometown of San Francisco for Germany many years ago to be with the love of his life. Kenji delivers the German lyrics effortlessly with his slightly distant, fey voice. Their playful harmonies, imaginative arrangements and brilliant backing vocals take us on a trip to a warm, mid-60s Californian summer. Friedrich Sunlight perform songs off their debut album and their new 7” single "Kommen und Gehen / Nachtbus nach Wien", which is slated for a summer release on the Hamburg label Tapete Records.
And how fitting: On July 29, 2018, the five gentlemen from a little town in Bavaria will be opening for the legendary UK group The Zombies in Berlin. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
